Glengad United Win Credit Union Cup 21/05/11

Glengad United defeated Dunree United 4-1 on penalties in the Buncrana Credit Union Cup Final on Saturday evening after the game finished 2-2 after extra time.

Played in a torrential downpour on an excellent surface premier division Glengad United were pushed all the way by first division Dunree in a very entertaining game. Glengad got a dream start when they opened the scoring after 46 seconds with Stephen McLaughlin breaking on the right and when his cross was not cleared Paul McDermott controlled before drilling a powerful low shot from the edge of the area inside Paul McGettigan’s right hand post. In fairness Dunree responded positively with Michael McGlynn heading straight at Seamus Houten following a corner. Philip McGuinness then laid the ball off to captain Barry Nixon whose attempted chip from sixteen yards clipped the top of Houten’s crossbar. They went very close on 19 minutes after Liam Baldrick collected a throw in and sidestepped a defender  but seeing his curling twenty five yards effort flash past the left hand post. A minute later a poor kick out from Houten fell to Brendan McDaid but his attempted chip drifted well wide. Glengad upped the pace and midway through the half a superb through ball from John G McLaughlin sent McDermott racing onto it but his attempted chip was brilliantly clawed away by McGettigan. Minutes later superb build up play from Glengad resulted in McDermott playing a neat one two with Terence Doherty to open up the Dunree defence but his curling effort was again brilliantly fingertipped to safety by McGettigan. Dunree lifted the siege on 36 minutes with Neil Moran finding space on the edge of the area but his effort was deflected over the bar off a defender. Before the break Glengad were unlucky after superb play from Patrick McDermott and McLaughlin released Terence Doherty on the right but as he advanced into the area he lost his footing and the chance was lost.

Dunree started the second half the stronger and they equalised on 48 minutes after McGuinness saw his free kick delivery from wide on the right elude all and nestle in Houten’s right hand corner of the net. The game went into a lull then but exploded again on 67 minutes after Terence Doherty fed substitute  Anthony Toland on the left running into the area but he was denied by a brilliant last ditch tackle from substitute Karl Kelly. Play quickly swung to the other end where a loose ball fell to Brendan McDaid and his first time effort clipped the top of the bar on the way over. Glengad had three chances then in a five minute spell with another substitute Seamus Doherty having a low shot well held by McGettigan before McLaughlin broke on the right and squared to Terence Doherty whose shot was deflected over.Doherty then broke on the right and picked out JG McLaughlin on the edge of the area but his effort was cleared to safety by Frank Kelly. Dunree responded with McDaid racing onto a long ball and seeing his effort gathered at the second attempt by Houten. Dunree then stunned the premier division side when they took the lead after an error in the Glengad defence on 78 minutes saw McDaid feed Liam Baldrick on the edge of the area and he fired a superb shot over Houten to the roof of the net. Glengad started to theow men forward and on 83 minutes they levelled matters again when Seamus Doherty burst past two players on the left and his driven cross was volleyed home by Patrick McDermott at the back post. They had a glorious chance to seal things after a patient build up in the 88th minute saw Charlie Byrne clip the ball over the top for Terence Doherty whose glancing header was well saved by McGettigan. In injury time JG McLaughlin headed a Stephen McLaughlin cross wide before Seamus Doherty ran onto a Stephen McLaughlin pass on the left but his driven effort was beaten away by McGettigan.

In the opening minutes of extra time Dunree spurned a gilt edged chance to take the lead after a dreadful error in the Glengad defence presented McGuinness with the ball on the edge of the area and with Houten stranded he shot weakly wide. Glengad replied immediately and Seamus Doherty’s deep cross from the left found JG McLaughlin but he blazed over. Dunree then had another chance after Baldrick picked out the unmarked McDaid but he headed well wide. In the second period Glengad had the only two chances with Seamus Doherty’s cross flicked back by Terence Doherty to Stephen McLaughlin but he blazed over. The final piece of drama in extra time came when Seamus Doherty’s driven cross was dropped behind him by McGettigan but McGlynn cleared off the line. Dunree missed their opening two spot kicks and Glengad converted through Patrick McDermott,Shane Doherty and John G McLaughlin. Dunree’s man of the match Baldrick then converted but Glengad substitute Seamus Doherty smashed home the fourth to clinch the cup for Glengad.
