Glengad Notes 05/09/10

Glengad United F.C. picked up their first 3 points of the league campaign with a 2-1 victory over their next door neighbours Culdaff F.C. at the Crua on Sunday in the opening round of the Jackie Crossan Premier Division.

Playing with the wind in the first half Culdaff started well and when the home defence failed to clear their lines Eugene McLaughlin pounced on the loose ball but saw his well struck effort turned round the post by Seamus Houghton. The visitors were rocked minutes later when Stephen McLaughlin advanced from halfway to lay the ball off to John G McLaughlin whose effort was parried by Martin McLaughlin in the Culdaff goal but the loose ball was slotted home by Paul McGonigle. They doubled their lead minutes later after McLaughlin crossed from the right for the unmarked Paul McDermott to head home at the back post. Culdaff dominated possession until the break with Conor Keddy going close with a couple of good efforts while on the stroke of half time Brendan McLaughlin’s free found Brian McGonigle but his header was well saved by the outstretched hand of Houghton.

The opening period of the second half saw defences dominate and the home side had to wait until the 71st minute to threaten. John G McLaughlin advanced to feed McGonigle on the left but his effort was saved by McLaughlin in the visitors goal. Culdaff replied with substitute Matthew Byrne feeding Eugene McLaughlin but again Houghton was equal to the task. Glengad should have had the game wrapped up early in the second half but missed a succession of clear cut chances. Culdaff eventually got the goal that they had threatened all day but it was a mere consolation as on full time Dermot Diver ran onto a long ball out of defence and lifted it over the advancing Houghton.

Players of the day were Patrick McDermott (M), John G McLaughlin (D), Seamus Houghton, and the impressive Stephen McLaughlin (F) continued his fine start to the season by gaining the much deserved Man of The Match award.

Glengad United F.C. Reserve Team played their first competitive game of the season in the League Shield against Culdaff F.C. Reserves on a blustery day at The Crua. Both teams looked to play football in this encounter with Glengad taking the giants share of possession in the first half with Liam Nelson hitting a post.

The second half was a different affair with Culdaff sharper and stronger in the first 25 minutes. The reward for their increased efforts was a goal after 15 minutes by their young midfield player with a text book finish from a misunderstanding in the Glengad Defence. His first time effort beat Michael McLaughlin (D) in the Glengad goal.

Glengad hit the woodwork again in the second half this time Stephen McLaughlin (O) the culprit. Glengad had a wealth of opportunities to clinch the points in this game but Culdaff showed the way with their ability to take a chance when it mattered and no matter what Glengad threw at the Culdaff defence in the final 15 minutes, the visitors hung on for their three points.

Players of the day, Stephen McLaughlin (D), Shaun Doherty (B), Hugh Kelly and Shane Kelly.
