Glengad Notes 15/08/10

Glengad United F.C. progressed to the Cassidy Cup Final last Tuesday night in Trawbreaga Park after a 1-1 draw with the hosts Rasheeny F.C.

Terence Doherty continued his goal a game average in pre-season to put Glengad in front but Rasheeny, who worked hard all game to deny Glengad time on the ball, deservedly equalised late on.  Having already defeated Culdaff F.C. the previous week a draw was enough to see Glengad progress to the final where they will take on Clonmany Shamrocks. The final takes place on Tuesday in Trawbreaga Park, Rasheeny with a 7.30pm kick off and the club would encourage as many people as possible to come along and support the team in a game that although is a pre-season friendly will no doubt prove to be a tough test against one of the top teams in the division.

On Friday evening Glengad United defeated Carrowmena F.C. on penalties in an action packed final of the Barney Cooper Cup after the game had finished 3-3 after extra time. The goalscorers for Glengad were an own goal and a goal each from John Gerard Mc Laughlin and Paul McDermott.  Ruairi Kelly was the hero in the penalty shootout as he saved 3 of Carrowmena’s penalties.  The club would like to thank the McDaid family for their support in re-launching this pre-season tournament.

On Sunday Glengad United continued their intense pre-season programme with a game against Leinster Senior League side Dunboyne A.F.C.  In a very entertaining game Dunboyne ran out easy winners by 4 goals to 0.  The game was scoreless at half time but Dunboyne finished strongly against a depleted home side.  The friendly game with Dunboyne, who were recently awarded the FAI Club of the Year by Brazilian legend Pele, was arranged at the request of the late Noel O’Rielly’s partner Rose McAllorum and the club were more than happy to oblige.

The draw has taken place for the Inishowen Football League Cup and Glengad United have been drawn against Carndonagh F.C. Dunree F.C. and Cockhill Celtic Youths. Glengad United take on Carndonagh F.C. in the first game in The Crua on Friday evening with a 6:45pm kick-off. This game is quickly followed by an away game against Cockhill Celtic on Sunday with a 2pm kick-off. The club would encourage as many supporters as possible to come along and support the team.  In the Reserve League Shield Glengad United Reserves have been drawn against Culdaff F.C. Carrowmena F.C. and Greencastle F.C. The fixtures will be announced at a later date.

The Glengad United F.C. lotto has been won.  There was great excitement among the McDaid and Ruddy families as the lucky winner was Caitlin Ruddy, who won the grand total of 7,600 euro. The club would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Caitlin on her win. This week’s lucky lotto numbers, drawn on Wednesday 11/08/10, were 4, 6, 18 and 23.    For your chance to win next week’s prize lotto tickets can be bought from club lotto sellers, club committee members, The Fishermans’ Inn, Lafferty’s Shop and on-line through and the club website The club as always would like to thank the community for its continued support.
