Buncrana Hearts 0 Glengad United 4

The first half of this cup final was an entertaining affair with little between the teams. But once Glengad took the lead they powered ahead and secured their third league cup title in a row. The first chance came to Glengad on 5 minutes when a Matthew Byrne free was headed up in the air by John McLaughlin for Adam Byrne to head narrowly over before after a good move Stephen McLaughlin crossed for Seamus Doherty to see his header saved at full stretch by Eoghan O Doherty. Buncrana responded on 16 minutes when Kieran McDaid found space to unleash a powerful effort which was straight at Kevin McLaughlin. Midway through the half a superb ball up the right by John G McDermott found Terence Doherty who fed Patrick McDermott in a central position but he fired just over from twenty two yards. Buncrana replied with Liam McCarron again unleashing a powerful effort but again it was straight at Mclaughlin.Glengad countered at pace with Terence Doherty advancing along the byeline and crossing to McLaughlin who laid the ball across to Seamus Doherty but his effort curled inches past the post. The best chance of the half came on 41 minutes when McLaughlin cut in from the right and his mishit effort found Terence Doherty whose control and shot was blocked by the outstretched foot of O’ Doherty before being cleared. Glengad upped the tempo on the restart with Matthew Byrne firing in an effort which O Doherty parried away at full stretch. They broke the deadlock on 55 minutes when Buncrana conceded a needless free kick on the right hand edge of the area and Byrne hammered the kick low to O Doherty’s right and into the bottom corner. More indecision in the Hearts defence minutes later saw them fail to clear and Terence Doherty hooked home from twelve yards. Glengad were in full flow with McDermott and Seamus Doherty both firing over the top from the edge of the area in quick succession. On 65 minutes McDermott made it three nil when he converted a penalty awarded for handball. They continued to press and made it four nil on 73 minutes when Terence Doherty broke away on the left and when his cross fundMcDermott his superb volley was brilliantly parried by O’Doherty but Seamus Doherty was on hand to slot home. More poor defending by the hearts saw a defender caught in possession and Terence Doherty saw his effort crash off the bar to McDermott whose follow up also crashed off the bar. Buncrana’s day was summed up on 85 minutes when Stephen McHugh was upended in the area but his weak penalty was saved low to his right by Kevin McLaughlin. Glengad responded on 88 minutes and when a Seamus Doherty free came off the post John G McDermott headed over. The final chance of the game fell to Buncrana when Seannan Murphy crossed from the left and although substitute Gerard Boyle beat McLaughlin to the ball his glancing header flashed wide
