Glengad Notes 07/08/11

Glengad United F.C started their preparations for their third season in the Inishowen Football League Premier division with a friendly against Cockhill Celtic F.C in Cockhill on Friday last.   In a tight affair Glengad were slow to start, going two goals down, but two second half goals from Terence Doherty rescued a draw. They continued their pre-season preparations with a friendly game against Glenavy F.C. Co. Antrim on Saturday. Glengad secured a 4-3 win, with goals from Declan Farren, John McDaid, Anthony Toland and Stephen McLaughlin.

The Barney Cooper Cup returns for its second year under its new set up. This year it will be contested between Glengad Utd, Carndonagh F.C, Carrowmena F.C and Culdaff F.C.  This year promises to be another exciting competition with defending champions Glengad United drawn against Carndonagh F.C and Carrowmena F.C up against Culdaff F.C.  The games will all kick off at 7.00 pm with the first match of Culdaff F.C v Carrowmena F.C taking place on Wednesday August 10th.  This will be followed on Friday August 12th with Glengad F.C v Carndonagh F.C. The 3rd/4th place play -off will take place on Monday, August 15th with the final taking place on Wednesday, August 17th.  The club would encourage as many supports as possible to come out and support these games.  Due to the number of pre-season games taking place all players will be contacted by their respective managers with regards to training.

Last week Glengad held their Annual General Meeting in the Glengad Community Centre.  Club chairman, Martin Mc Dermott, addressed a large crowd, thanking them for attending and outlining, in a wide ranging report, the progress the club has made on and off the field over the last 12 months. He had particular praise for the dedicated band of lotto sellers who are vital to the clubs ongoing fund raising actives.  He also thanked the club committee members Neil McColgan (club secretary) and Denis McGonagle (Club Treasurer) for their contribution to the running of the club.  A special mention was also given to the Pitch Development Committee of Paddy Doherty, Davy Doherty and Tony McColgan, along with grass cutters Shaun and Brian Doherty, who have helped Glengad achieve and maintain one of the best pitches in the Inishowen Football League.  He concluded by thanking both reserve and first team players for their dedication throughout the season and the first team on bringing Glengad united its first major trophy, The Credit Union Cup.

Reserve team manager, Paul Murphy, reported that after a long hard season with a small squad his players did extremely well to maintain their position in the Inishowen Reserve Premier League.  After some early struggles they managed to settle down and produce some very good performances.  He also thanked the players for their support and determination throughout the year.

First team manger Liam McClean thanked Paul Murphy for his support throughout the year. He also thanked his backroom staff of Davy Doherty and Neil McColgan, along with trainers Paul Murphy and Gavin Cullen.  He congratulated the players on a very successful season, finishing runners up in the League and winning the Credit Union Cup.  He urged the team to continue their progress and improve on last year’s performances.  Liam also thanked the local community for their support.

This week’s Lotto numbers drawn on Wednesday 03/08/2011 were 5, 9, 14 and 16.  The jackpot of E3,000 was won by Jennifer Logan, Culkeeny, Glengad.  Next week’s jackpot is E500.  Lotto tickets can be bought from club lotto sellers, club committee members, The Fisherman's Inn, Lafferty's Shop or on-line through locallotto.ie.  The club, as always, would like to thank the community for its continued support.
