Glengad Notes 12/05/2013

Glengad overcome Fanad

Knockalla Caravans Senior Cup   Semi Final

John G McLaughlin's double sends Glengad to first Knockalla Final.

Glengad United   3-0   Fanad United

Played at the Crua in windy conditions this was a tough encounter between Glengad and a youthful Fanad side led by the experienced Paddy  McGrenaghan. With the wind Glengad started well and keeper Sean Daffan held a few early crosses  confidently. On 13 minutes Fanad replied when Shane Buchanan found space but fired well over from twenty yards. Midway through the half Glengads Terence Doherty saw a close range effort parried by Daffan and when it was cleared to the edge of the area Charlie Byrne drilled wide. Patrick McDermott and John G McDermott then both fired well over before Patrick Mc Dermottt played a one two with Doherty but saw his effort saved by Daffan .The best chance of the half for the home side came on 42 minutes when JG McLaughlin crossed for John Mc Daid whose first time right footed effort was brilliantly turned round the post by Daffan . Mc Grenaghan had an early shot in the second half flash just past the right hand post before Glengad resumed control. Stephen McLaughlin broke on the right and when his superb cross was scrambled clear to the edge of the area JG McLaughlin's effort was well parried by Daffan. Fanad responded and a long range Darragh Mc Daid effort was gathered at the second attempt by Martin Mc Laughlin. Glengad made the breakthrough on 70 minutes when after a poor back pass Daffan's clearance was collected by Terence Doherty whose flighted cross found JG McLaughlin to head to the top corner. They made it two nil on 78 minutes after Doherty was upended and McLaughlin converted from the spot to get his second. And they completed the scoring on 88 minutes when John Mc Daid fed Stephen McLaughlin on the right and his superb cross was swept home from close range by substitute Niall McLaughlin.

Glengad will play Swilly Rovers in the final at a date yet to be confirmed.

Reserve Shield Final 06/04/13

Favourites Aileach Res retained their reserve league shield title with a hard earned win over a gallant Glengad side. Indeed the game changed totally in the 31st minute when Glengad were reduced to ten men and conceded a penalty in the same incident.Aileach were first to show and on 8 minutes an almighty scramble developed following a corner before Glengad eventually cleared.Glengad replied and neat inter play saw Niall Mclaughlin lay the balll off to Gary Kelly whose through ball for Christopher McLaughlin was gathered by the alert David McGeady. On 18 minutes McLaughlin got his head to a deep corner kick only to see Liam Burke head off the line with McGeady beaten.A poor free kick wide on the right by McGeady was then controlled by McLaughlin whose shot took a slight deflection allowing McGeady to get across and gather.Glengad continued to press and on 27 minutes after a corner was half cleared Brian Doherty controlled and fired a shot goalwards which McGeady gathered at the second attempt.Minutes later McLaughlin fed Kelly but he hammered wide from twenty yards.Aileach lifted the pressure and Eddie McGrath fired staright at Michael Mclaughlin when the ball broke to him on the edge of the area.On 31 minutes an Aileach corner was headed goalwards by McGrath but handled on the line by Stephen McLaughlin resulting in a penalty kick and a red card. The experienced Stephen O'Donnell kept his nerve to hammer low to the bottom right hand corner with keeper Mclaughlin getting a hand to it but unable to keep it out. Glengad did not lie down and on 36 minutes Mark Smith raced intoi the area and when his spectacular overhead kick beat McGeady it was Mark McLaughlin who got back to head off the line. Before the break Michael Morrison headed down the right for McGrath to advance into the area but his angled effort was saved by the legs of McLaughlin. Glengad were first to show on the restart with McLaughlin seeing a header land on the roof of the net. But Aileach lifted the tempo then with Burke running through the middle of the defence before firing just wide. Then Morrison raced onto Burke's pass to round McLaughlin who forced him wide and he hesiatted before laying the ball back to Ciaran Criag who blasted over the bar.Glengad replied and on 57 minutes substitute Michael Doherty headed narrowly wide from a corner.Aileach then put a fine move together when substitute Damien Coyled fed Burke to release Craig and his close range effort crashed off the bar back into the arms of McLaughlin. They made it two nil on 67 minutes after a superb passing move all along the left hand side ended with Craig slipping the ball into Stephen Doherty who advanced to slide the ball low under the advancing McLaughlin.Glengad kept pressing and on 73 minutes created a clear chance after Gary Kelly released Niall McLaughlin but his effort was superbly blocked by the outstretched leg of McGeady. Glengad really needed that one to go in but it wasnt to be.

For Glengad Michael McLaughlin, Brian Doherty & Niall McLaughlin all had very good games while for Aileach, Mark Mclaughlin, David McGeady and Ciaran Craig were prominent but the award went to Aileachs Liam Burke who constantly caused the Glengad defence trouble with his inteligent runs and use of the ball not forgetting his early goal line clearance.
